"While the Train Pauses"
Not every moment feels important when it happens. Often, there is no sense that it should be remembered or preserved. Just like when a train comes to a halt on the tracks and pauses for a while during its journey. Yet on this occasion, one soldier reached for his camera and took the opportunity to capture a few photographs.
These are the moments I find particularly fascinating. They are not dramatic, historic, or especially noteworthy in themselves, but they represent the reality of military life. Much of a soldier's existence was made up of waiting, travelling, resting, and passing the time between significant events.
Photographs such as this provide a rare glimpse into those ordinary moments. They add a sense of humanity and normality to the historical record, reminding us that history is not only shaped by great events, but also by countless small and often overlooked experiences.
