LABOUR SERVICE (MUNKASZOLGÁLAT)

1939–1945

The Hungarian Labour Service system (Munkaszolgálat) formed a unique and often overlooked part of Hungary's wartime experience. Established as an alternative to regular military service, labour units performed essential duties in construction, transportation, engineering work, fortification projects and logistical support both within Hungary and on the Eastern Front.

Although not combat troops, labour servicemen frequently operated in close proximity to military formations and endured many of the same hardships of war. The surviving photographs, documents, identification papers and personal accounts provide a valuable historical record of their service and daily lives.

This section of the TŰZKERESZT Archive is dedicated to preserving material relating to Hungary's Labour Service units and the individuals who served within them between 1939 and 1945.
