The Tűzkereszt Photo Archive is divided into two parts: individual historical photographs published as articles on this website, and complete albums hosted externally on SmugMug.
Single photographs with historical context, identification notes and research commentary are published as separate posts on Tűzkereszt History.
Larger groups of related photographs, documents and collection material are organized as complete albums on SmugMug, where they can be browsed in full context.

ARCHIVE COLLECTIONS
Photographer Ede Sztanek's Epic Front Images, 1942–1943
Sztanek Ede (1908–1996) was a Hungarian photographer whose life and work documented the social history of northern Hungary throughout much of the twentieth century.
During the Second World War, Sztanek served as a civilian driver attached to Hungarian military units on the Eastern Front. Throughout the campaigns of 1942–1943 he photographed both the everyday routines of soldiers and the harsh realities of war.
This collection presents a selection of Sztanek's surviving wartime photographs, documenting military life, transportation units, winter operations, frontline conditions and the human experiences of soldiers serving far from home.
Military Flag Ceremony of the 18th Field Artillery Battalion, Orosháza, 4 October 1942
The 18th Field Artillery Battalion (18. Tábori Tüzérosztály) was a Royal Hungarian Honvéd artillery unit stationed at Orosháza from September 1938. Initially subordinated to the 18th Infantry Brigade and later to the 18th Light Division, the battalion spent the early war years primarily in training and garrison duties.
Although the unit probably did not participate in the occupation of Upper Hungary (Felvidék) in 1938 or the 1941 campaign against Yugoslavia, it took part in the occupation of Northern Transylvania following the Second Vienna Award in 1940.
The photographs in this collection document the ceremonial presentation of a unit flag to the battalion on 4 October 1942. The flag was donated by the Count Zichy family of Pusztaszőlős, and the honorary zászlóanya (“flag mother”) was one of the young daughters of the family, following a long-standing Hungarian military tradition.
Among the distinguished guests present was General Károly Beregfi, attending as a representative of the Regent. Beregfi would later become Minister of Defense in Ferenc Szálasi's government during the final months of the Second World War.
This album preserves a rare visual record of wartime military ceremony, unit traditions, officers, soldiers, ceremonial flags and artillery personnel of the Royal Hungarian Army during 1942.
