" Határvadász on Patrool "
A Hungarian border guard poses for a photograph in the rugged mountain regions along Hungary's wartime frontiers during the Second World War. Over his standard field tunic he wears a white sheepskin vest, a practical piece of cold-weather equipment favored by troops serving in harsh winter conditions. Besides providing valuable insulation against the severe mountain climate, its light coloration offered a degree of camouflage in snow-covered terrain.
Such garments were primarily field-expedient items associated with border guard and frontline service rather than standard-issue equipment throughout the Royal Hungarian Honvéd Army. Their use varied by unit and region, and they were most commonly seen among soldiers operating in remote mountainous sectors where additional protection from the elements was essential.
